Are Yaktrax Walk Good for Senior Citizens?
The suitability of Yaktrax for senior citizens depends upon your physical capabilities, where you live, and how you plan to use them.
- You must remove Yaktrax before going indoors if the interior surface is smooth because the steel coils are extremely slippery on those surfaces. Examples include the supermarket, drug store, and post office. If it's not easy for you to take Yaktrax off and put them back on you have a problem.
- You should remove Yaktrax before you drive because the straps can impede movement between the pedals.
- If you live in the city, you must be careful where you step because Yaktrax Traction Cleats with steel coils are extremely slippery on utility covers, sewer grates, floors in train stations, smooth bricks, and on entry steps on mass transit.
- If you have negotiate steeper inclines; and
- lastly, if you live where temperatures drop to extremely low temperatures because spikeless traction cleats with steel coils become less effective as ice becomes denser.

What is the difference between the Yaktrax Walk and Yaktrax Pro?
Yaktrax Walk gives you the same traction as the Pro. However, the Pro is more durable because the steel coils are 1.4mm vs the Walk's 1.2mm coils and the straps are real-rubber and stronger vs. the Walk's elastomer straps. The Pro also has a removable Velcro™ Performance Strap that helps to keep the traction cleats aligned on your footwear and from coming off in deep snow.
What's the difference between the Yaktrax Walk and the Yaktrax Walker?
There is no difference. Implus renamed the Yaktrax Walker to Yaktrax Walk. It was purely a marketing decision.
Will Yaktrax PRO Traction Cleats give me better traction than the Yaktrax Walk?
No. Yaktrax Pro is more durable than Yaktrax Walk. However, the only way the Pro's traction is superior to the Walk is that the thicker, stronger straps and Velcro™ Performance Strap keeps the PRO better aligned on your footwear. You're also safer wearing the Yaktrax Pro because there's a reduced risk of the Pro breaking.
How long do Yaktrax Walk Traction Cleats last?
Yaktrax are a consumable just like any other article of clothing or ice cleat. How long your Yaktrax Walk lasts depends upon several factors including
- your weight;
- how often do you use them; and
- lastly, how much bare payment you walk on. It's rare that every foot of a sidewalk, parking lot, or road is completely covered with ice and packed snow. It's unreasonable to remove them and then put them back on every time you encounter a dry patch. Bare spots speed up the abrasion on the steel coils because the coils are abrasion resistant, not abrasion proof.

Now having said all that on the average you can expect two seasons. When you consider the cost per use it's very low-cost insurance compared to the cost of an injury.
Will Yaktrax Traction Cleats eliminate my risk of slipping on ice and packed snow?
No. No traction device can guarantee you won't slip and fall on ice. What Yaktrax can do is significantly decrease the probability that you won't fall to make the risk acceptable.
Do Yaktrax Walk work in deep snow or slush?
No. Winter Walking Ice Cleats work in regular snow and slush as well as ice and packed snow.
Must I remove my Yaktrax every time I go indoors?
You absolutely must remove Yaktrax before going indoors where there are smooth, dry floors like those found in the
- grocery store;
- drug store,
- train station; and
- post office.
That's because Yaktrax Traction Cleats with wound steel coils are extremely slippery on this type of floor.
If you're
- not capable of putting them on and taking them off
- constantly going in and out of doors; or
- lastly, unwilling to put up with the hassle on putting them on and taking them off;
Can I wear Yaktrax while I'm driving?

Are Yaktrax good for hiking?
It depends where you're hiking. Yaktrax are not designed to be used off-road.
- Rough surfaces will cut the straps and abrade the steel coils.
- The steel coils can be extremely slippery on exposed rocks especially if they're smooth or rounded.
- Yaktrax should not be worn on sandy or gravel covered surfaces.
- Frequent non-ice and snow covered surfaces will also affect durability.
Does Yaktrax Walk work on black ice?

I've read that Yaktrax have 10 times more biting edges than spiked ice cleats. Does this mean the traction is 10 times better than spiked ice cleats?
No. The key to traction on ice is penetration. Yaktrax stainless steel coils are non-aggressive. Therefore, traction requires hundreds of biting edges to equal the traction of just one well-designed spike. In addition, the non-aggressive coils become less effective in frigid temperatures when ice is denser.
Can I run with Yaktrax?
I don't recommend any ice cleats for running. I especially don't recommend spikeless ice cleats for running because you need aggressive spikes. Furthermore, one of the most common ways Yaktrax fail is that wound steel coil breaks. If a coil breaks, it can catch on you running pants causing you to trip and fall forward.
Will Yaktrax work on Ski Boots?
No. Implus does offer a product called SKITRAX. However, I don't carry them

Will Yaktrax work on roofs?

They're named after the surefooted Tibetan Yak. However. the concept has nothing to do with the Yak. The idea originated by observing how Sherpas would tie strips of leather around their shoes to get traction on ice.
Yaktrax Walk Warnings and Safety Tips
Yaktrax Walk will not damage most indoor floors. Nevertheless, you must remove Yaktrax before walking on smooth, dry floors because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on these surfaces.
Do not drive while wearing Yaktrax. The straps can catch on pedals.
I do not recommend Yaktrax for people living or working in cities. Again, the Yaktrax wound steel coils are extremely slippery on smooth surfaces that include
- sewer grates;
- utility hole covers;
- escalators;
- floors in train stations;
Do not use Yaktrax on surfaces covered with sand or loose gravel.
If you are unable or unwilling to remove your Yaktrax Walk before going indoors or driving, or you live or work in a city, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats or Winter Walking ICE BEAST™ LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.
