Benefits

Yaktrax Pro is a user-friendly and practical shoe ice traction device that allows you to walk safely on ice and packed snow. Join the thousands of professionals, including

  • police officers;
  • firefighters;
  • mail carriers;
  • construction workers;
  • emergency caregivers; and
  • athletes who rely on Yaktrax Pro for winter safety. Here's why.

You walk naturally. Find out why that's important...

There are no special skills to learn. When a traction device does require that you walk unnaturally, you tend to forget yourself. When you do, that's all it takes to slip and fall. With Yaktrax you're safer because you walk the same way you do on dry pavement.

You get excellent traction on ice and packed snow.

That's because the Pro shares the same exclusive, proven spikeless SKIDLOCK ice traction system originally introduced with the revolutionary Yaktrax Walk. Hundreds of biting edges grip the ice for 360° traction.
Note: You get the amazing traction from both the Yaktrax Walk and Yaktrax Pro. The Pro is simply more durable and stays on your footwear better.

The Yaktrax Pro holds up better in more vigorous outdoor activities like work and sports. Here's why...

  • Hand wound stainless steel coils on the Pro are stronger, thicker 1.4mm instead of the 1.2mm coils used on the Yaktrax Walk. One of the main reasons Yaktrax wear out is that the coils abrade over time. Thicker coils last longer. But the actual traction regardless of the thickness is the same.
  • Straps are a much stronger, tougher real rubber compound instead of the elastomer material used on the Yaktrax Walk. Straps are less likely to break. Yaktrax Pro stay more securely on your shoes and boots because the elasticity is much stronger. That's important if you're participating in vigorous outdoor winter activities and helps keep them on you feet when you're walking through deep... particularly wet... snow. Although strong and more durable, the straps stay flexible at temperatures as low as -41°F.
  • Yaktrax Pro Coils, Straps and Wear NubStraps last longer because nubs reinforce and protect high wear points.

The Pro stays in place on your footwear during strenuous activities and won't come off in deep snow.

Yaktrax Pro Removable Performance StrapYaktrax Pro has a removable Velcro® performance strip. The reason it's removable is because, although it's a simple process, it's one more thing you have to deal with when your putting them on and taking them off. That's important because you have to take all Yaktrax off before you go indoors. Steel coils can be very slippery on dry smooth surfaces like the floors found in supermarkets, drug stores, etc. If you're planing to use Yaktrax where you'll be going in and out of doors and you're not doing anything strenuous or trudging through deep snow you can take the straps off and simplify your life.

The Yaktrax Pro is so light-weight you won't even notice the additional weight when wearing them.

The biggest XL Pro weighs just 7 oz.

Effective Slippery Conditions

Yaktrax Pro is a medium-duty traction device for outdoor use. The Pro provides traction on ice and packed snow only. Yaktrax spikeless traction devices are not designed for traction in deeper snow, slush, black ice, or mud. In additional, spikeless ice cleats become less effective in frigid temperatures when ice is denser. Read my Ice Cleats Selection Guide to find out more.

Call me at 610-670-2549 for free consulting regarding preventing slips and falls in other slippery situations like walk-in freezers, food processing, or industrial applications.

Recommended Uses

  • Routine uses typically covered by the Yaktrax Walk if you get a lot of snow and ice and will use your Yaktrax frequently including...
  • Outdoor Work, Long Walks
  • Running(1), Ice Fishing, Winter Sports
    (1)See the new Yaktrax Run
  • If you expect to use Yaktrax frequently or walk or run for long distances.
Note: The Pro may not be the best choice regardless of how often you'll use them.

Yaktrax Pro may not be the best choice for older folks who have weakness in their arms or hands or people with certain disabilities and medical conditions. That's because the straps are harder to stretch. The added durability won't do you any good if you can't get them on your shoes and boots. Consider the Yaktrax Walk or Winter Walking SPARE SPIKE™ Ice Cleats that have Dual Pull Straps™.

To eliminate the inconvenience of having to take off your ice cleats before going indoors, check out Winter Walking ALTRAGRIPS-LITE LOW PROFILE Ice Cleats or Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.

I don't recommend any Yaktrax model using the SKIDLOCK System for off road applications. The straps can be easily cut by sharp surfaces. Debris can get stuck in the steel coils. Coils are quickly abraded by rough surfaces.

While most Yaktrax reviews are positive you'll find that negative reviews often result from people who were sold the wrong product in the first place. When it comes to ice cleats "one size fits all" definitely doesn't apply. Click here to see my Ice Cleats Selection Guide.

Business Use

There are several excellent choices for ice traction devices that are not always easily found or made clear doing research online. Many times you're under pressure to find a quick answer because the icy conditions are already here. But keep these thoughts in mind.
  • Choosing the wrong ice traction devices can actually increase the chance of injuries.
  • No one ice traction device is best for all situations.
  • Many times more than one type of ice cleat is required to prevent lost time accidents.
Don't guess because professional advice is available and it's FREE. Call me at 610-670-2549 to discuss your specific needs for ice, snow and all slippery conditions.

Important Warnings and Safety Tips

Yaktrax Pro will not damage most indoor floors. Nevertheless, you must remove all Yaktrax spikeless models before walking on smooth, dry floors because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on these surfaces.

Do not drive while wearing Yaktrax. The straps can catch on pedals.

I do not recommend Yaktrax for people living or working in cities. Again, Yaktrax are slippery on smooth surfaces that include

  • sewer grates;
  • utility hole covers;
  • flooring in train stations;
  • metallic steps found on buses and trains; and
  • tile, brick, or marble surfaces.

Do not use Yaktrax on surfaces covered with sand or loose gravel.

If you are unable or unwilling to remove Yaktrax Pro before going indoors or driving, or you live or work in a city, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats. LOW-PRO and safe to wear on most indoor surfaces and while driving. LOW-PRO also provides better traction on the city hazards mentioned above.

"The Yaktrax Pro are awesome! I use them everyday in the snow and ice. Without them I would not be able to do my job without falling about 10-15 times a day! This winter has been especially difficult staying on my feet, but the Yaktrax Pro gives me the confidence I need to stay upright!" Mark N., Hebron, IL 01/24/14

"They will help with walking in snow but I just discovered ICE! (I am from L.A.) Isn't there another type especially for not slipping on ice? If you carried the ones with small picks? on bottom, I would look into that also." Linda M., Tekoa, WA 01/20/14

"They're great on snow and give you a reasonable amount of traction on ice. They stay on my shoes very securely but are not too difficult to take on or off. The one complaint I have is that I was looking for something that works equally well on bare pavement and covered surfaces. That's because the areas I walk include a combination of both (e.g., sidewalks or parking lots with icy patches, or snow-covered paths with periodic clean areas). Yaktrax are not very secure on cleared surfaces, and it probably wears them out very quickly. While they're removable, it's not practical to take them on and off as you're walking along. However, Yaktax are excellent when used for what they are intended!" Jeremy C., Bryn Mawr, PA 01/19/14

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Yaktrax Pro give you better traction than the Yaktrax Walk?
Generally, no. However, the Pro uses more durable materials, and the coils are thicker. The Pro's traction is somewhat superior because the thicker, stronger straps and Velcro® Performance strap keeps them better aligned on your footwear. Alignment on footwear is important during strenuous activities like shoveling snow.
How long do Yaktrax Pro last?
Yaktrax are a consumable just like any other article of clothing or ice cleat. How long your Pro lasts depends upon several factors including
  • your weight;
  • how often do you use them; and
  • how much bare payment you'll be walking on. It's rare that every foot of a sidewalk, parking lot, or road is completely covered with ice and packed snow. It's unreasonable to remove them and then put them back on every time you encounter a dry patch. Bare spots speed up the abrasion on the steel coils because the coils are abrasion resistant, not abrasion proof.
  • Will you be walking over rough surfaces that may tend to cut the rubber straps.
  • If you're looking for something more durable, check out industrial-strength ice cleats.

Now having said all that on the average you can expect two seasons. When you consider the cost per use it's very low-cost insurance compared to the cost of an injury.

Will Yaktrax eliminate slipping on ice and packed snow?
No. No traction device can guarantee you won't slip and fall on ice. What Yaktrax can do is significantly decrease the probability that you won't fall making the risk acceptable.
Do Yaktrax work in unpacked snow or slush?
No. SPARE SPIKE Ice Cleats are a low cost alternative for Yaktrax that will work in regular snow and slush. Visit SlipResistant.net to find industrial grade ice cleats that will work in snow and slush. HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats are an exciting new alternative to Yaktrax Pro that will work in deep snow and slush as well as on packed snow and ice.
Must I remove my Yaktrax every time I go indoors?
You must remove Yaktrax before going indoors where there are smooth, dry floors. Examples include floors found in the grocery store, drug store, train station, or post office. That's because all Yaktrax are extremely slippery on this type of floor.

If you are not capable of removing them or you are constantly going in and out of doors consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO or ALTRAGRIPS-LITE LOW PROFILE Ice Cleats.
Are Yaktrax good for hiking?

It depends where you're hiking. Yaktrax are not designed to be used off-road.

  • Rough surfaces will cut the straps and abrade the steel coils.
  • The steel coils can be extremely slippery on exposed rocks especially if they're smooth or rounded.
  • Yaktrax should not be worn on sandy or gravel covered surfaces.
  • Frequent non-ice and snow covered surfaces will also affect durability.
Do Yaktrax work on black ice?
I do not recommend Yaktrax for use on black ice because you need more aggressive traction. Consider Winter Walking HIGH-PRO or Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.
I've read that Yaktrax have 10 times more biting edges than spiked ice cleats. Does this mean the traction is 10 times better than spiked ice cleats?
No. The key to traction on ice is penetration. Yaktrax stainless steel coils are non-aggressive. Therefore, traction requires hundreds of biting edges to equal the traction of just one well-designed spike. In addition, the non-aggressive coils become less effective in frigid temperatures when ice is denser.
Are Yaktrax good for Seniors?

It depends. You must remove Yaktrax before going indoors if the interior surface is smooth because the steel coils are extremely slippery on those surfaces. Examples include the supermarket, drug store, and post office. If it's not easy for you to take Yaktrax off and put them back on you have a problem.

You should remove Yaktrax before driving because the straps can impede movement between the pedals.

Note: Yaktrax Walk is easier to put on and take off than the Yaktrax Pro because the straps aren't as strong.

If you live in the city, you must be careful where you step because Yaktrax can be extremely slippery on utility covers, sewer grates, floors in train stations, smooth bricks, and on entry steps on mass transit.

If you have negotiate steeper inclines, or you live where temperatures drop to extremely low temperatures, you may want a more aggressive tractions device.

If these situations apply to you, got to Ice Cleats for Senior Citizens and the Elderly.

Will Yaktrax work on Ski Boots?
No. There is a product called SKITRAX™ but I don't currently sell them.
Will Yaktrax work on Neos® Boots or Bunny Boots?
No. If you have large, bulky boots consider ICEGRIPS™.
Will Yaktrax work on roofs?
No. Furthermore the metal on metal contact climbing a ladder would be extremely hazardous. Visit Korkers.com to find slip resistant shoe attachments specifically designed for roofers.
What is the Yaktrax Extreme?
If you order a Yaktrax Extreme online you will receive a Pro... same product... same packaging. There is a totally different spiked product called the Yaktrax XTR EXTREME™ designed for off road use.
Yaktrax Pro sizes run small. If your shoe size is at the top of a size range shown below, you may be better off getting the next larger size, especially if you plan to wear them over heavy boots or shoes. If you can't decide, choose the bigger size.
